Today it seems self-evident to us that the cello is in the foreground as a solo instrument – until the end of the 17th century, however, things looked quite different: Although the cello had been around for some time in a design similar to that of today, the idea of using it not only as a continuo instrument was completely new. In Bologna in particular, there were early cello virtuosos who constantly added new facets to the instrument. Tuning and range were by no means as uniform as they are today. The ensemble Bassorum vox unfolds a fascinatingly colourful spectrum in its new recording, which makes the early history of the cello as a solo instrument audible.
