It is not a frequent occurrence that the world of music can listen to a completely new work from a high-ranking composer. Thomas Fritzsch, the untiring collector of novelties for his own instrument the bass viol, has succeeded in achieving this feat: he created a sensation with a printed version of 12 previously lost Fantasias by Georg Philipp Telemann. These works had been self-published by Telemann in 1735 in a presentation of the then contemporary status of all musical and technical possibilities of the bass viol – an instrument which around this time had already passed the zenith of its Baroque fashion hype. For this reason, this collection presents even more evidence for the self-confidence of the music entrepreneur Telemann and his competence never oriented to mere fashion. The abundance of contrapuntal and melodious highlights in this collection certainly proves Telemann’s compositional competence: Thomas Fritzsch has without doubt excavated a real gem.
