Ah, what freedom the cats enjoy as they roam around our houses at night!
Michael Wise composed his canon *A Catch on Midnightcats* with wonderful dissonances based on the *Folia* harmonic pattern, which remains popular to this day; not ‘cat music’, but expressive and exquisite.
This canon forms the starting point for our programme. Although presented with a touch of humour, the parable of the midnight cats explores life’s great themes: freedom, love and loneliness.
The Muses’ Fellows complement the programme with further 17th-century arias and dances, weaving them into a dialogue with their own poetry and compositions: inspired by early music, they create contemporary music using texts written by the ensemble itself. The styles of the old and the new are interwoven – into melodies that linger long in the memory.
