As an opera reformer Christoph Willibald Gluck is known to every music lover with works such as Orfeo ed Euridice or Alceste. Unfortunately, however, the operas before his Viennese reform works remained largely unknown, although there are also some extremely beautiful and masterly works to be discovered. Gluck’s Ezio was written in 1750 for a touring opera company in Prague and, despite his frugal means, already clearly shows the way to the Viennese main works. For a concertante performance in Düsseldorf, two stars among the countertenors, Matthias Rexroth and Max Emanuel Cencic, could be won over.
“The interpretation by the Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik under Andreas Stoehr is certainly excellent.“
(Ekkehard Pluta in: Fono Forum 11/2007)
“outstanding … hearing it is sheer listening pleasure.“
