Zum Tanz‘ directly expresses his reverence of the German composer, the background to the ‘Symphonie fantastique‘ is rather more complicated. Berlioz combines Beethoven’s wealth of ideas with the innovative and “characteristic” sound effects he had encountered in von Weber’s ‘Der Freischütz‘.
