Carola Bauckholt, as she herself puts it, “shapes the instruments in the image of the original sound, which comes from somewhere else. The instruments should be modelled on this, and they should, so to speak, find this sound.” Tools, metal balls or mechanical devices provide her with inspiration; she achieves unsettling sound combinations when these original sounds encounter those imitated by classical instruments.
