With this CD, the ensemble recherche takes us far back into the complex world of Renaissance polyphony. Harrison Birtwistle and Peter Maxwell Davies, along with their younger colleagues Karlheinz Essl and Georg Kröll, have taken on the works of Ockeghem, Dunstable and Tallis. In these adaptations, their works appear astonishingly fresh – the spectrum of changes ranges from re-orchestration of the original and rhythmic alienation to completely newly composed passages.
