Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was not only well-known as a composer, but also as a violin virtuoso of his time. The sonatas of his famous cycle named after the accompanying copperplate engravings of the Mysteries of the Rosary are highly colourful and brilliantly virtuoso works. Their special characteristic is scordatura, the individually specified tuning of the violin strings for each sonata, which enable a more colourful differentiation of the musical character of each composition. The authentic listening experience of this new recording is made unique through the utilisation of several original instruments made by the Tyrolean violinmaker Jakob Stainer – his violins were actually played and loved by Biber and were much sought after and more valuable than their Italian counterparts in the 17th century due to their smooth and delicate silvery tone. The top-class ensemble featuring Daniel Sepec, Hille Perl, Lee Santana and Michael Behringer bring Biber’s sonatas to life with effervescent vitality.
