Scaling Beethoven’s Eight-Thousander – Lei Meng explores a summit of piano literature

Variation means change — a creative impulse that has driven composers for centuries. Among the great variation cycles in music history, one rises like an eight-thousander: Ludwig van Beethoven’s 33 Changes on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli, op. 120. On her new recording, pianist Lei Meng places this monumental late work at the centre and invites listeners on an ascent into Beethoven’s most imaginative terrain.

What began in 1819 as a clever publishing idea — Diabelli’s request for single variations from contemporary composers — ignited in Beethoven a burst of inspiration. From the modest C-major waltz, he shaped 33 character pieces of astonishing stylistic breadth: majestic marches, tender ariosi, humorous miniatures, sharply chiselled virtuosic movements and grand contrapuntal constructions. Beethoven dissects, transforms and transcends the simple theme, creating a sonic document of his late style — a work that challenges performers and audiences alike.

Lei Meng pairs this towering cycle with a work from Beethoven’s early years: the energetic, sharply profiled c-minor Bagatelle WoO 52 from 1795. Here we already encounter the composer who would make the key of C minor his signature — with scherzo-like wit, driving force and a softly glowing trio in C major.

Together, the Bagatelle and the Diabelli Variations form a compelling panorama of Beethoven’s artistic evolution. They reveal how immense musical landscapes can grow from the smallest seeds — a bagatelle, a simple waltz. Lei Meng brings this journey vividly to life with clarity, depth of understanding and an expressive palette that highlights the timeless modernity of Beethoven’s “eight-thousander.”
