“Sweet melancholy” – in 16th and early 17th century England, this was no contradiction. “Melancholy” was regarded as a noble attitude of mind; in mild serenity, one virtually enjoyed the world’s pain. In addition to several dance movements, the Cellini Consort plays fantasies by composers ranging from William Byrd to Henry Purcell. The result is an atmospheric picture of the time, and in the end it is not all melancholy.
