Im Londoner Musikleben des 17. Jahrhunderts spielte die erfolgreiche Verleger-Familie Playford eine wichtige Rolle: Sie versorgten um 1650 weite Teile der Bevölkerung mit stets frischem Notenmaterial für das häusliche und gesellige Musizieren. Die eingängigen Instrumentalsätze und Tänze boten den Londonern eine willkommene Ablenkung von den politischen Wirren in den Zeiten des Bürgerkriegs. Einige dieser farbigen, abwechslungsreichen Stücke macht das nach den historischen Playfords benannte Ensemble The Playfords dem heutigen Hörer in authentischer Interpretation wieder zugänglich.
